History
Emilio discovered the power of projected images during the mid-60s in Uruguay, when he integrated slides of landscapes into performances of his band. This experiment began to take form during musical performances in the Canary Islands during the 1990s. Emilio projected images onto band members and carefully placed stage props to add further interest to stage presentations.
Later, he began to create abstract images in order to project them on assemblages made of fabric, metal or other materials that he salvaged from dustbins or public garbage dumps. This is how he created the performance piece “Poubel’Art” (“dustbin art”) in cooperation with his wife, Brigitte, and son, Sebastian, which they performed throughout Europe.
“Poubel’Art” combined a light show of animated automatons with live musical performance. At-risk youth were invited to participate in creating the artwork.
During his “Poubel’Art” show at the Noga Hilton in Cannes in 1996, Emilio used video projection for the first time. The positive reaction and Emilio’s resulting vision of the possibilities of this artistic direction encouraged him to follow this virtual pathway, and to refine his use of computer techniques. Melimage was born a few years later in Ireland.

A pioneering musical experience to that time, where computer-generated music was mixed with sounds of objects retrieved from the trash.
Here, Emilio could count on the special support of two prestigious Uruguayan musicians : Jorge Trasante and Juan Carlos Gentile
Artist’s Statement
“To be able to transform the appearance of a building, a monument or make pictures appear on plants, trees or waterwalls is almost a magical act.
“I have never felt so sure of doing what I love and giving the best of myself than when working with sound and image in order to create audiovisual illusions on elements in our environment.
“It’s a technique that gives wings to creativity. But once airborne, where should one direct one’s flight? In order to control this technique you have to know and manipulate image and sound through several different software programs.
“It’s often very hard work. Each show is personalized and every time it’s a new creative challenge. Ideas and inspiration may arise at any time, during the workday or at 3 o’clock in the morning. !
“The attractive part of my work is that there are so many presentation possibilities. The projections can be indoors or outdoors, on man-made or natural elements. The performances can be used in the cultural domain (to present a biography or an homage), during festivals, for advertising or can even be viewed as a film.”
